Graciela Iturbide awarded 2014 Fine Arts Medal

Graciela Iturbide has been awarded the 2014 Fine Arts Medal by Mexico’s National Institute of Fine Arts.  The award recognizes her contribution to culture in Mexico over her 45-year career. Read the press release here (English translation).

Espiritu Santo is a collection of six photogravures Iturbide produced with Graphicstudio, paired with screenprinted text from the account of Hernando de Soto’s first expedition to Florida in 1553. Espiritu Santo layers image and history, a present day Hispanic woman meets a Spaniard of the sixteenth century at the site of de Soto’s first landing, which he christened “Espiritu Santo”.
