Cyanotypes is a collection of six distinct series produced by visual artist, performer and composer Christian Marclay in collaboration with the university-based atelier, Graphicstudio where he has made repeated visits to explore and research this unique elemental process.

English scientist, Sir John Herschel, developed the cyanotype process that dates the dawn of photography in 1842. These cyanotypes are created by coating heavy rag paper with a light sensitive chemical emulsion and by placing objects directly on the surface resulting in the blue photogram, which reveals a silhouette that varies in darkness due to the opacity of the objects. Utilizing this photogram technique, often with multiple exposures, he “draws” with cassettes and unfurled tape, exploring a range of compositional strategies in the intense blue of the cyanotype that are partly inspired by modernist abstract painters. These unique prints have been realized in various dimensions: singles (22” x 30”), diptychs (44”x 30”), and very large-scale images (100” x 51”).

This volume of the 44 unique Prussian blue plates, has been captured and beautifully bound in this limited edition offering made available by JRP|Ringier Books, Zurich and co-published with Graphicstudio|Institute for Research in Art, University of South Florida.

Known as the inventor of “turntablism,” Christian Marclay has explored the relationship between the visual and the sonic phenomena thru his work in collage, sculpture, installation, photography, video and performance. He was born in California, raised in Switzerland and now works between New York and London. He has an extensive exhibition and performance record including solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.; the Venice Biennial; the Kunsthaus, Zurich. He is represented by the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York and White Cube in London.
